A Free Class

from Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine

We're stoked to bring back the ESHM Free Class Series! Led by Mel Kasting and Thomas Easley, and featuring occasional special guest appearances from the herbal world, this series will be both enriching and engaging. And fun, don't forget about fun. :)

Our goal with this series is threefold: To provide practical skill development for clinical students and practitioners, to connect with some of our favorite herbalists through focused Q&A sessions, and to offer herb lovers everywhere the chance to dive into crafting formulas for specific health concerns.

Cultivating Joy: Herbs for Resilience Building

with Mel Kasting, RH (AHG)

Joy in hard times isn't denial; it's self-preservation. It's how we build the resilience to keep showing up for ourselves and our communities when everything feels overwhelming and difficult.

In this 90-minute class, we'll explore how herbs can be practical allies in this work. We'll start by examining the relationship between difficulty and joy, including why making space for lightness doesn't mean ignoring what's heavy, and how cultivating joy becomes an act of resistance against despair.

We'll dive into the Unani-Tibb tradition of exhilarant herbs. These plants are used to uplift, lighten the heart, and bring genuine joy. We'll also explore herbs that make connection feel easier, sleep more restorative, and rest actually restful. These aren't magic bullets, but they are sensory allies that can help us stay present, move with more ease, and create the conditions where joy has room to grow.

About Mel

Mel Kasting, RH (AHG)

Mel is a practicing clinical herbalist, educator, poet, and emergent facilitator. As Clinical Program Director and Free Clinic Manager, she helps clients to get the support they need while guiding students through the rigorous process of preparing for and participating in active clinicals.

Mel’s passion lies in both serving clients and empowering students to develop the essential relational health and clinical skills required to excel as herbal practitioners. Through her clinic work, art and class facilitation, she explores the intersections of herbalism, botany, society, and somatic experiencing to support plant-centered botanical medicine and celebrate the teeming diversity life has to offer.

In her private practice, she blends traditional western herbalism and clinical nutrition with somatic herbal practices. She recognizes the significance of addressing personal and societal traumas as an integral part of the healing journey. This profound understanding shapes her approach, as she guides individuals toward greater well-being and helps them navigate the complexities of their own healing processes.
